What a splendid piece of software engineering that installer is! I then use the Vodafone software, then internet connect. Nov 9, 6: Follow this walk-through at own risk! I have a modem huawei e In the popup-menu “Vendor” mine shows “Apple” but that doesn’ matter. Installing the huawei e220 usb 3g modem on mac os x important: do not connect the usb modem to your computer before you have installed the necessary driver.

Forget that modem, its way past its prime designed for windows 2000 and XP but if you're the techie type and like pain and misery;) then try this Work-Around: You need another PC/Laptop and a USB Pen/Key Drive to do this: 1) Connect the E220 to your XP PC/Laptop 2) access the emulated CD Drive and copy all the Contents onto a USB Pen Drive. 3) Disconnect the E220 and the Pen Drive 4) Connect the Pen Drive to your Vista PC and install the software using the Autorun.exe file (Run as Administrator) 5) Connect the E220 - Vista will only recognize a USB Mass Storage Device and the emulated CD drive which it cannot access.

6) Open the Device Manager (in the Control Panel) 7) Look for the USB Mass Storage Device in the 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' Section If there are more than one USB Mass Storage Devices, right click each one, select Properties, Details and then 'Children' If it says 'Huawei' somewhere inside the Value, you found the right one. 8) Right click on the Mass Storage Device and select 'Update Driver Software' 9) Select 'Browse my Computer' 10) Select 'Let me pick' 11) Uncheck 'Show compatible devices' 12) Select '(Generic USB Host Controller)' in the Manufacturer Tab 13) Select 'USB Composite Device' in the Model Tab 14) Finish installing the Composite Device driver 15) Afterwards, Vista will add another USB Mass Storage Device, and if you are lucky, also 2 'Data Interfaces' 16) If it doesn't detect the Data Interfaces, disconnect and reconnect your E220. Hi cdobbs, Thanks for the feedback. I've followed the instructions meticulously and I'm still not getting any joy.

I've attempted this on two E220's. Additionally, I've also tried connecting with a Huawei K3715, which is a more recent model. In all cases I receive a Code 31 error. In the device manager it confirms that all items are working correctly, except the MODEM type. USB Srorage Device, 3G PC UI interface (on COM5), are all working correctly, however the Modem has a yellow explanation mark over it and when you click on properties, it describes the Code 31 error - Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (same happens on the K3715). What else can I try, as I've spent a fortune on the laptop as a gift for my wife yet it is practically useless without connectivity.

Going out and buying a new modem is also not an option - our exchange rate makes them prohibitively expensive, therefore we wait for our free hardware upgrades, and that's what we have at the moment. Regards, Norwin.

You're leaving out critical information. What type of the operating system are you running? 32bit or 64bit, as I said, if its 64bit then this won't do you any good.

Did you attempt those instructions (which you said you did) but did the install in XP compatibility mode (just checking) reposting those instructions in a larger type so it'll be easier to read Work-Around: You need another PC/Laptop and a USB Pen/Key Drive to do this: 1) Connect the E220 to your XP PC/Laptop 2) access the emulated CD Drive and copy all the Contents onto a USB Pen Drive. 8) Right click on the Mass Storage Device and select 'Update Driver Software' 9) Select 'Browse my Computer' 10) Select 'Let me pick' 11) Uncheck 'Show compatible devices' 12) Select '(Generic USB Host Controller)' in the Manufacturer Tab 13) Select 'USB Composite Device' in the Model Tab 14) Finish installing the Composite Device driver 15) Afterwards, Vista will add another USB Mass Storage Device, and if you are lucky, also 2 'Data Interfaces' 16) If it doesn't detect the Data Interfaces, disconnect and reconnect your E220. 17) Vista should now detect all the E220s Data Interfaces 18) When asked to insert the disk containing the drivers, choose 'I don't have the disk' 19) Enter the Drivers WinXP Subfolder of your USB Pen Drive 20) Repeat Step 18&19 for the second Data Interface 21) Start your Huawei Mobile Connect (Web'n'Walk Manager) Software, and connect:). I've used the software from Huawei, as per your link, as well as Web 'n Walk, especially the 64 bit intergrator from T-Mobile, to no avail. I've tried all the 64 bit drivers I can lay my hands on using above instructions, and still no joy.

Incidentally, I tried connecting a Sony Ericson phone as well, as a tethered modem, and I received the same message (Code 31) for its driver. The only connection I've managed to get working is my wife's Curve Blackberry, through the BB Desktop manager.

Unfortuatnely this is slow (as its not 3G), and expensive, as its a talk and not data package. Any other ideas? Thanks, Norwin. You still need a 32 bit Windows XP machine to run the firmware updater. Phone shop may be able to do this for you. I am in the same situation not having Windows XP to update modem. I have had the trusty E220 since 12' iBook G3 OSX10.2.

Works in OSX10.6, but not BOOTCAMP. Other option is VMWare Fusion and use virtual network for Windows 7. New firmware including driver images should work on 64-bit. For example Vodafone has: DO NOT APPLY THIS UPDATE. IT DOES NOT WORK IN XP AND BRICKS THE DEVICE.

After long troubleshooting with Huawei E220 on Windows XP, I found that this unit has an issue with Microsoft.NET Farmework 2.0. Huawei E220 runs on Microsoft.NET framework 2.0. (you will get also problems with Microsoft.NET framework 2.0 service pack 1) It can work perfect with version 2.0 but once you will update Microsoft.NET framework 2.0 things start to go wrong.

PC is freezing, slow etc. To solve that issue I suggest to do the following: 1. Make a restore point and restart your PC. Uninstall all Microsoft.NET framework versions Via control panel - add/remove programs and restart your PC. Uninstall Huawei E220.

Drivers

4 restart PC 5. Delete all Vodafone or Huawei folders left in c:/document settings/ subfoders and in c:/Program files folder as well. Insert your Huawei E220 installation CD and start fresh installation. (don't plug the unit yet and wait until it ask you) 7. Press yes if it will ask you to install Microsoft.NET framework 2.0. The installation CD will do it.

Finish the installation and restart you PC. Double click on Vodafone icon and follow the instruction (In this stage you will need to plug the modem) Good Luck.
